Adult Eye Exams

Adult eye exams in SE Calgary

Getting your eyes regularly checked and examined is extremely important for not only your eye health, but your overall health too. In addition to spotting any eye conditions you may be suffering from, comprehensive eye exams often detect other underlying health issues such as diabetes or hypertension.

At Specs in the City Optometry we highly recommend that you get your eyes examined annually. This can help identify any conditions your eyes are potentially at risk of developing before they progress further and threaten your vision. It can also help with keeping your prescription or vision history up to date.

Should I really be getting an eye exam every year?

If you are between the ages of 19 and 64, we highly recommend that you get your eyes examined at least once every two years. That being said, if you are able to, we would love to see you annually for a comprehensive eye exam so we can stay on top of your vision and detect any issues that may arise even sooner. If you should suddenly find yourself experiencing any noticeable or major changes to your vision though, we strongly suggest that you book an eye exam with our SE Calgary optometry clinic as soon as you can.

What takes place during an eye exam?

Our SE Calgary optometry clinic features state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and equipment. Using this equipment, our experienced optometrists can detect eye conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, astigmatisms, myopia, and age-related macular degeneration before they progress further and compromise your ability to see. By addressing these types of eye conditions before they deteriorate further, many times we can save a patient from losing their vision entirely. We can also detect other health problems such as diabetes or hypertension which your eyes can alert us to.

Depending on the patient and their unique set of circumstances, an adult eye exam can vary in length. For someone who doesn't have any complications or other ailments, a routine eye exam typically takes between 20-30 minutes. If you are older or have existing eye complications, the exam may take longer. Those who suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure, or glaucoma will also likely require a longer eye exam.

  • The medications or supplements you’re currently on
  • A detailed family history of serious medical conditions

The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) provides coverage for annual eye exams granted you’re between the ages of 0-18, or over 65. The provincial plan can also be used in times of an emergency should you require an immediate appointment with an eye doctor. For most people it will take a few days before their eyes become adjusted to a new prescription. During this time it’s common to experience distorted vision, eye strain, or mild headaches. If these issues persist for more than a week or two, contact our SE Calgary optometry clinic right away and we’ll address the issue.

Progressive lenses provide the vision power of bifocals or trifocals without the distinguishing lines people have come to know them by. With a lineless, single vision look, progressive lenses allow the wearer to simply adjust their eyes or head to see up close, at medium distances, or far away.

Our convenient SE Calgary optometry clinic is located right off Blackfoot Trail in the Meadows Mile Professional Building.
